The Art Fund responds to Collections Knowledge consultation

The Art Fund has responded to a consultation by the Museums Association, looking at how knowledge about collections and collecting in museums can be better developed and shared in future.

The Art Fund has responded to a consultation by the Museums Association, looking at how knowledge about collections and collecting in museums can be better developed and shared in future. It is recognised that many curators are not being given the opportunity or encouragement to develop an expertise and that valuable knowledge is being lost when long-standing curators retire.

The Art Fund has developed a number of schemes which actively encourage curators to work together and share experiences – for example, Art Fund International, which partners galleries with non-collecting institutions, and encourages travel, research and networking. We recommend that more networking opportunities are made available to curators, that more structured Subject Specialist Networks are put in place, and that curators are encouraged to take mid-career secondments, especially to institutions overseas.
