At the beginning of 2006 The Art Fund offered its support to the National Portrait Gallery as it launched a campaign to purchase one of the most important and well-known portraits of the metaphysical poet and writer, John Donne (1572-1631).  The Gallery was given six months to acquire the smouldering portrait after it was export-stopped, and The Art Fund came forward immediately with a £200,000 grant to kick-start the campaign. In May the National Heritage Memorial Fund put its money on the table with £750,000, and a public appeal ensured the remaining funds were secured. The portrait is now on display in Room 2 at the National Portrait Gallery.
