Art Fund welcomes new HLF funding initiative

  • 23 October 2006

The Art Fund welcomes a new initiative by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) which will make £3m available to UK museums in 2007-08.

The money pledged by the HLF will support acquisitions, the development of curatorial skills, research and increased activities for the public. Grants will be available from £50,000 up to a maximum of £200,000.

The HLF’s initiative comes five months after The Art Fund published the results of its major survey into museum collecting, which revealed that a shocking 60% of the UK’s museums and galleries are unable to allocate any money for adding to their collections. Lack of funding means that many are reliant – some entirely dependent – on the generosity of donors.

The initiative is a first step towards recognition that building new and vibrant collections is at the heart of what museums do.
