Disposals debate - we want your views

  • 12 September 2006

The disposals debate is gathering momentum in the UK. A review of the Museums Association's Ethical Guidelines on Disposals is underway and The Art Fund is engaging with the consultation. We want to hear your views.

There is currently ‘a strong presumption against’ museums disposing of works of art and other materials in their collections. The guidelines also state that disposals should not be undertaken with the principle aim of generating funds. This advice, and other issues relating to disposals, will be reviewed during the consultation.

The consultation process will run until the end of October 2006 and new guidelines are expected early in 2007. It has been over ten years since the MA’s Ethical Guidelines on Disposals were produced – the current review is widely welcomed by museums.
