Update: Leeds Art Gallery has now reopened with Lothar Götz’s brilliant new commission Xanadu welcoming visitors in the entrance stairwell.
Help us reveal the outstanding architecture of this Victorian building and see our iconic stairwell completely transformed in time for our grand re-opening in October.
This year we have been closed to carry out much needed major work to re-glaze the original Victorian roof. In the course of this work, we have revealed the original barrel vaulted ceiling covered over in the 1970s, which we are renovating ready to re-open to visitors later this year. We want to celebrate our beautiful building and the discovery of this stunning space.
We need your help to commission artist Lothar Götz to create a beautiful wall painting that will lead visitors up the original Victorian staircase to the newly revealed gallery. This immersive wall painting will be the centrepiece of the gallery, drawing attention to the new influx of natural light from the renovated spaces above, with vibrant abstract colour contrasting with the architecture.
We need to raise £17,000 to make this wall painting a reality. Can you help us? If you donate, you will receive a bespoke reward to say thank you.
