We are so grateful to the thousands of funders who’ve helped us raise over £1 million for museums.
These much-needed funds will help them respond to the Covid-19 crisis with resilience, evolve for the future and keep creating unforgettable experiences for people across the UK. Thank you.
It’s been an inspiring few weeks since we launched the campaign in November, with thousands of donors coming together with leading artists to show their love for the UK’s vital museums and galleries. Jeremy Deller, Lubaina Himid, the estate of Howard Hodgkin, Anish Kapoor, Michael Landy, Melanie Manchot, Cornelia Parker, David Shrigley and Supermundane all donated artworks as rewards for donations; museum lovers including Harry Hill and Russell Tovey have helped to spread the word; and the campaign has been supported by a major donation from the Headley Trust.
The money raised will allow us to help many more museums across the UK, and they’ll be able to apply for a share of this funding in the spring.
We know, however, that the impact of the continued lockdown remains devastating for so many museums, and that they will still face enormous challenges when restrictions begin to ease, as social distancing limits visitor numbers. Of museums we surveyed last autumn, 60% were worried about their survival, and some are now facing permanent closure.
Indeed, the need for support is huge: when we made £2.25m of emergency funding available in 2020, we received applications from 451 museums totalling £16m, and were only able to support 15% of them.
The continued support of the public combined with government investment will be key to ensuring as many museums as possible survive the crisis. That’s why we’ll be continuing to fundraise via artfund.org/together and providing a way for people to keep supporting the places they love. A number of rewards will remain available for a limited time, for those who wish to choose one as a thank you.
Your incredible support has kickstarted a movement and helped to remind everyone just how important museums are. They bring us joy and inspiration, they enrich our lives and bring us together – and we know you’ll be there for them when their doors reopen.
Please look out for emails in the coming weeks regarding your rewards, and we look forward to keeping you updated with how your support is helping.
