After successful initial cleaning tests, the team of conservators at the HKI have begun the removal of the dirty varnish from the two Canaletto paintings your generosity has enabled us to conserve.
One can already see the startling difference the removal of the dirty varnish makes on both pictures.
After the full removal of the old varnish and later retouchings, the paintings will be X-rayed and infrared will be taken along with pigment samples in order to discover more about the hidden layers underneath the surface of the paintings.
Sadly, the paintings’ return has now been delayed until November 2019, as other paintings from the conservation project presented some cleaning problems, which have now been resolved. This unfortunately means that those of you who have kindly selected the postcard rewards won’t receive it until the conservation is completed.
Meanwhile, the frames have been cleaned by our in-house conservator and are ready to host the pictures once they are back!
