National Railway Museum

With its collection of historically significant railway vehicles, interactive exhibits, and commitment to preserving railway heritage, the National Railway Museum (NRM) is a must-visit for trains enthusiasts. Part of the Science Museum Group, the NRM tells the story of British rail transport, locomotive engineering and its lasting impact on society.

Spot a train

The museum is a huge space, housing carriages and power cars of trains that have gone the distance and are now out of service. See the Sir Kenneth Grange, the first InterCity 125 produced. Take a look at the Shinkansen the only bullet train on display outside of Japan, or the steam speed record holder (126mph in 1938) the Mallard steam locomotive.

The museum also houses a variety of railway-related objects, from everyday items used by passengers to historical documents.

Interactive exhibits

Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery, features exciting hands-on interactive exhibits. There is also an audio trail of soundtracks you can follow on your phone as you move around the museum.

Model railway

Discover the miniature world of tunnels, stations and meticulously recreated trains in the museum’s O-gauge model railway. Alternatively experience the full size tracks of the East Coast Main Line from the viewing balcony (subject to the weather conditions).

Flying Scotsman

‘Step aboard’ the Flying Scotsman VR immersive experience, and journey back in time as you join the greatest moments in the locomotive’s past 100 years.
