Hall Place and Gardens is a 16th century flint mansion, nestling in a yew garden on the banks of the River Cray at Bexley in Kent.

Originally built in 1537 as a country residence for a wealthy merchant, Sir John Champneys, the house is a rare example of Tudor architecture with many original features still intact. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a garden lover, or simply looking for a relaxing day out, Hall Place, with its beautiful surroundings, fascinating history, and ongoing events, is a good place to explore and unwind.

House tours

Entrance to the historic house is available by guided House Tour, where you will be able to explore all of the fascinating parts of the building including the panelled Great Hall, Tudor Kitchen, Great Chamber and Hallway. You can also discover the secret wartime history of Hall Place and how American soldiers stationed here intercepted messages sent by the Germans.

Award-winning gardens

Explore the award-winning grounds that encompass a stretch of the River Cray, and discover a variety of landscapes, from manicured lawns and herbaceous borders to tranquil walled gardens. A highlight is the magnificent topiary, featuring whimsical shapes like the Kings' Beasts (mythical creatures associated with the British monarchy).

Gallery and tea room

The Bexley Heritage Trust Gallery, located in the stables, showcases exhibits on the history of the local area and the Austen family, famous for their literary contributions. The Riverside Tearoom provides a place to relax and enjoy refreshments after exploring the house and gardens. There's also a gift shop with unique souvenirs.

What a hoot!

During summer holiday season, visit the All About Owls aviary located on the grounds. Here, you can encounter a variety of owls and learn about these fascinating birds of prey.
