Enfield's 'Jewel in the Crown’ was fully restored in 2012. Today, the house is a museum offering a glimpse into the lives of its past residents, from the original owner Sir Nicholas Rainton to the Parker-Bowles family who lived there in the 20th century.
Historic Hall
The house's well-preserved interiors showcase period furniture, paintings, and decorative objects, transport visitors back to bygone eras, whilst exhibits delve into the social history of the area.
Beyond the grand house
Forty Hall Estate extends far beyond the grand house. The sprawling grounds encompass 260 acres of parkland, including formal gardens, a picturesque lake, and a meandering river. The estate is also home to one of the oldest Cedar of Lebanon trees in England, which is over 300 years old and stands in the Pleasure Grounds.
There is also a programme of seasonal events, exhibitions and concerts. For younger visitors there is Rip’s Outdoor Trail, or the wooded play area that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Did you know?
Beneath the grounds of Forty Hall Estate lies the remains of the Royal Palace of Elsyng, which was the ssize of Hampton Court, and a childhood residence for the future King Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I. The site is so important that it has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument by Historic England.
