Coleraine Museum

The collection is currently based at Coleraine Town Hall, and whilst the museum might not have a permanent address, it offers a rich and engaging exploration of the area's history and culture .

Local history

Delve into Irish History Starts Here, an exhibition that explores the story of Mountsandel, the earliest known settlement in Ireland, dating back nearly 10,000 years. The exhibition also sheds light on Coleraine's unique place in history as the first town established during the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century.

Art and folklore

The museum boasts an impressive collection of art and artefacts. Highlights include the largest public collection of works by Hugh Thomson, a world-renowned illustrator and local talent. There are also works by other local artists, such as Charles McAuley, whose paintings capture the beauty of the Causeway Coast. Beyond visual art, the museum cares for a collection of books and papers belonging to famed folklorist Sam Henry.

Talks and events

The museum also arranges talks and events throughout the year, providing a platform for deeper dives into specific aspects of local history and culture, and an opportunity to learn from experts and engage with other interested people.
