Discover stories of fantasy, identity and resistance, as told by queer comic-makers in this first exhibition of its kind.

Spanning the 1940s to the present day, this first major UK exhibition of queer comic-making features rarely displayed original artworks from comics, strip cartoons, graphic novels and zines. More than 60 artists are represented, ranging from underground creators to influential icons, including Alison Bechdel, Tove Jansson, Tom of Finland, Kate Charlesworth and Rupert Kinnard.

Curated by renowned comics specialist Paul Gravett, Queer as Comics chronicles how comic creators have represented LGBTQIA+ lives from the UK’s first published gay comic strip to the sharp satire of the 1970s and 80s queer press and contemporary zines and webcomics. Artwork on display addresses state power, discrimination and bold visions for the future, showcasing how comics can provide a voice, community and life-affirming characters.

Queer as Comics will be among the debut exhibitions at Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, opening on 5 June as the world’s largest permanent space dedicated to illustration.
