A major retrospective of a beloved Japanese contemporary artist.
This expansive retrospective brings together more than 150 works by renowned Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Known for his expressive portraits of children with defiant gazes, Nara’s practice spans painting, sculpture, ceramics and installation.
Influenced by music, popular culture and folklore, his work explores themes of isolation, resistance and nostalgia. The exhibition includes early pieces, rare sculptures and new paintings, offering a comprehensive look at Nara’s evolving style. Originally shown in Bilbao and Baden-Baden, this expanded version at the Hayward Gallery provides a unique opportunity to experience the depth of Nara’s artistic world.
