Get up close to paintings old and new in this special exhibition at Brodsworth Hall
Following the successful acquisition in 2023 of the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age artist Jan Wijnants’s Landscape with Hawkers and Sportsmen, 1659, a new exhibition at Brodsworth Hall and Gardens has opened to celebrate the painting.
Story of a Painting spotlights Jan Wijnants’s painting, which has been redisplayed and can be seen up close in the dining room alongside new interpretation, lighting and accompanying objects. Younger visitors can explore the art throughout the hall with a new family trail and have a go at a fun activity making their own landscape scene with magnetic pieces drawn from the Brodsworth art collection.
A display of works inspired by Brodsworth’s surrounding landscape has also been created in collaboration with Doncaster Art Club. The Club, founded in 1897, is one of Yorkshire’s oldest art clubs. The display, which features 57 artworks by Club members, explores how today’s local landscape painters make connections with Brodsworth in a similar way to how Dutch painters interpreted the 17th-century Dutch landscape.
Story of a Painting runs until 3 November 2024.
