Explore six decades of a painter who captured 'portraits of humanity' and whose career was shaped by the civil rights struggle
The first exhibition in Europe of African-American painter Sylvia Snowden will take place at The Hepworth Wakefield, presenting a key selection of her work that spans six decades.
Born in 1942 in North Carolina, Snowden attended art school in the 60s during a pivotal moment in the civil rights struggle. As an artist, she was deeply invested in ideas of social change, and has described her powerful figurative paintings as ‘portraits of humanity.’ Snowden uses oil paint, pastels, acryil and collage to create a thick impasto effect to capture the psychological essence of her subjects.
