A critique of Western society through history, ecology, and technology
Mexican-British artist Mónica Alcázar-Duarte critiques Western society's fixation on speed and resource accumulation while embracing her ancestors' indigenous knowledge. In this exhibition, Digital Clouds Don’t Carry Rain, she explores ecological concerns amidst Industrial Revolution remnants in Derbyshire. She also questions knowledge classification and societal hierarchies through her self-portraits mimicking 18th-century Casta paintings. These incorporate symbolic elements, such as flower-covered masks representing empire emblems and endangered bees' vital plants.
The exhibition culminates with short film U K'ux Kaj / Heart of sky, Mayan god of storms, 2023-24, produced at Maní in the Yucatán Peninsula, where the Mayan codices were burned in 1562.
