Explore Myanmar's history and rich cultural output over the last 1,500 years while it endured dramatic political and cultural fluctuations.
From influential superpower to repressive regime, Myanmar – also known as Burma – is a country with a turbulent history. Moving from 450 AD to the present day, the exhibition aims to provide a deeper account of this country at the crossroads of Asia and spotlights the incredible creative output of its peoples.
Beginning with 14th century kingdoms jostling for power with Thailand, China, Sri Lanka, and moving to the annexation by the British in the 19th century, the show concludes by exploring how modern-day artists have defied censorship and combined activism with art.
