Pop Art, masculinity, and prison culture reimagined following contemporary artist Dean Kelland's four-year residency at HMP Grendon.
Birmingham-born artist Dean Kelland's four-year residency at HMP Grendon (2019-2023) culminates in this exhibition at Ikon Gallery featuring films, prints, and sketchbooks that reimagine the psychoanalytic dialogue between Pop Art and Prison Art. Imposter Syndrome interrogates flawed notions of identity and masculinity through the lens of prison and psychiatric institutions, establishing the prison as a centre of cultural production. During his time running the carceral studio, Kelland found himself assuming multiple identities, with increasingly compulsive behaviour underpinning his filmed performances. The exhibition is accompanied by a showcase of artwork by HMP Grendon prisoners, plus a public programme of events and a symposium.
