An overdue reminder of Morisot’s influence within the Impressionist movement, this exhibition features works previously unseen in the UK – and explores a new angle on the artist’s practice.
Berthe Morisot was one of the founding members of Impressionism, her rapidly executed paintings of everyday scenes featuring heavily in the group’s exhibitions, with enduring influence. Despite this, there has been no major exhibition in the UK to focus on her work since 1950; presented in partnership with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism is the first in over 70 years.
Presenting 40 of Morisot’s most significant works, drawn from international collections, the retrospective uses new research to establish a new link between the artist’s work in the latter half of the 19th century, and the cultural resurgence of 18th century art in France. Comparisons are drawn to 20 different works from the earlier period, from which Morisot took copies, adopted materials and drew inspiration.
Contrast comes from Morisot’s subject matter, with paintings of women’s private spaces and rituals informed by her own experience. Discover the originality that set the artist apart through this showcase of her work, much of which has never been shown in the UK.
