Striking Editions is a celebration of the art of lithography through a diverse body of artists working in the second half of the twentieth century. Both figurative and abstract, these striking images reflect a vibrant period of experimentation with prints that explore the exciting possibilities of the medium. From the bold allegorical images of Paula Rego to the rich storytelling of Uzo Egonu, these images brilliantly display the versatility of lithography.

Lithography (from the Greek meaning writing on stone), is a printmaking process in which a design is drawn or painted directly onto a polished slab of limestone (or prepared metal plate) using an oil-based crayon or ink. The stone is then etched with the design using an acid solution and prepared for printing. The etched stone can be used multiple times before losing its crispness, allowing an artist to create high-quality editions. The technique particularly appeals to artist printmakers because it allows for vibrant colours and expressive mark-making, showing the hand of the artist.
