Discover our brand-new exhibition, 'The Van de Veldes: Greenwich, Art and the Sea', and explore how these extraordinary artists changed the course of British maritime art.
In 1673, two Dutch artists set sail to England at the request of Charles II, and together they established a studio at the Queen's House in Greenwich. Now, 350 years on from their first arrival in England, the Queen's House will once again become home to their magnificent works.
The National Maritime Museum holds the largest collection of the Van de Veldes’ artwork in the world and is a longstanding centre of Van de Velde expertise. The Van de Veldes: Greenwich, Art and the Sea will celebrate how these forgotten masters transformed British maritime art and inspired future generations of artists, including J.M.W. Turner.
