Ivan Cutting and Karen Goddard will speak about the joys and challenges of turning historical material into engaging theatre.
The lead speaker will be Norfolk-based writer and director Ivan Cutting, former Artistic Director of Eastern Angles. Joined by freelance theatre producer Karen Goddard, this free event will focus on the joys and challenges of turning historical material into engaging theatre. Taking place on Thursday 26th September from 2pm – 3.30pm this fascinating insight will cover Ivan’s forty-year career writing, directing and producing plays inspired by East Anglia’s places, people and history. These productions have included hundreds of characters ranging from Margaret Catchpole and Boudicca to Basil Brown, and from Raedwald to George Orwell. Themes have varied too including Maria Marten and the murder in the Red Barn, the 1953 floods, the herring girls of Lowestoft and GI brides. In the past, Ivan often used live folk music and his own recorded interviews with East Anglian people as the basis for his work creating documentary-style plays, something that is still popular today.
