Workshop

Natural Dyeing and Foraging for Dye Plants with Fiona Eastwood

1 June 2024
11am - 4pm
£90

In this hands-on workshop you’ll explore the potential of dye plants grown in the museum’s Dye Garden and foraged locally.

The session will start with a short walk to forage for leaves and flowers that produce colour. You will learn how to prepare and use natural dyes on wool, cotton, silk, and linen, how to make a dye bath and how to prepare solar jars for smaller amounts of yarn/fibre.

All the methods used will be safe and sustainable. This course is suitable for behinners and those who would like to further their knowledge of dye plants and natural dyeing.

Fiona is a weaver and dyer who has a BA hon from Camberwell School of Art and a post graduate teaching degree from the London Institute for Education.

She helps manage the Dye Garden at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft.

Fiona finds the entire process; from growing the dye plants from seed, dyeing the yarns, and using them for her textile work extremely rewarding.

She is fascinated by the distinctive characteristics of plants and the range of colours achievable. Her aim is to help others reconnect with nature and explore the potential of growing and foraging for dye plants so they can use natural dyeing in their creative practice.

She has run natural dyeing workshops for the National Trust, Forest School Association and one to one workshop for artists and local schools. Recently, she collaborated with Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings MBE on the installation ‘Drawn to the Light’ (نور), part of ‘Double Weave: Bourne and Allen Modernist Textiles’ at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft.
