The X Trials - a History of Law and the Supernatural Talk by Naomi Ryan

26 May 2024
3.30-4.30pm

Join criminal barrister and ghost-enthusiast Naomi Ryan for a journey into this strange area of law.

Over the last 800 years, the Tolhouse has been a dungeon, a gaol, a courthouse and a police station. It has been attacked by rioters, gutted by enemy bombs and has housed all manner of villain, from pirates and witches to robbers and murderers. Some people even say that those scoundrels never left, with many reports of spooky encounters with former inmates.

This gruesome and ghoulish legal history makes the Tolhouse the perfect place to learn about some very creepy legal cases! Throughout history, people have believed in strange and fantastical creatures, including witches, ghosts and even demons. On occasion, these beliefs have led them to commit bizarre and terrible crimes, from fraud to murder, and when the offender appears before the judge and jury, their beliefs cannot be ignored. Instead, they must be subjected to the same harsh legal scrutiny as any other case.

So join criminal barrister and ghost-enthusiast Naomi Ryan for a journey into this strange area of law, in which the Fortean meets the forensic, the bizarre is examined by barristers and the strange is investigated by the state, and learn about a whole array of weird cases, including witches leaking war secrets, fairies stealing wives and ghosts solving their own murders!
