Discover some fascinating links between animal adaptations and the aircraft in our collection!

Biomimicry is design that is inspired by nature. The aviation industry has often looked to nature for inspiration and to help solve problems, from simply wanting to fly like a bird to using cutting-edge technology to help pilots see in the dark. Find the aircraft in our collection to discover what the natural world and the RAF have in common!

You can explore biomimicry in our collection using our Biomimicry Trail and Biomimicry Resource. Both are available to download, and paper copies of the Biomimicry Resource will be available during the Easter school holidays.

Be part of The Wild Escape, a nationwide celebration of UK nature inspired by the wildlife found in museum and galleries. The Wild Escape is made possible with support from Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants, with additional support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Kusuma Trust, Foyle Foundation and a group of generous individuals and trusts.
