BBC Civilisations Festival

More than 250 cultural venues across the UK are participating in the BBC's Civilisations Festival to coincide with the broadcast of BBC Arts' new 'Civilisations' series.

The Civilisations Festival is a ground-breaking collaboration between the BBC and museums, galleries, libraries and archives across the UK. More than 250 organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be holding events from Friday 2 to Sunday 11 March 2018.

It coincides with the start of a new television series on BBC Two inspired by Kenneth Clark's landmark 1969 programme, Civilisation, which explored the history of western art, architecture and philosophy. The new series features historians David Olusoga, Mary Beard and Simon Schama, and will expand the scope of the original series to uncover the visual culture of societies around the globe.

The accompanying festival will shine a spotlight on the work and collections of the nation's cultural institutions through a range of events designed to spark debate, broaden understanding, and share ideas about what the term ‘civilisation’ means for wider society and local communities.

You can find out what's happening in your area via Culture24’s Museum Crush website where full festival event listings are available. The BBC will also be collaborating with different venues to tell stories from these events, with coverage on local BBC radio stations and beyond.

Art Fund is supporting a number of the events taking place, after making £20,000 worth of grants available to participating venues to help fund their involvement.

The successful Art Funded events are as follows:

The project has been developed and delivered by the BBC in partnership with organisations across the cultural sector, including National Museum Directors’ Council, The Museums Association, Association of Independent Museums, Society of Chief Librarians, Scottish Library and Information Council and the British Library Living Knowledge Network, Culture24 and Art Fund.

The first episode of Civilisations can be seen on BBC Two at 9pm on Thursday 1 March
