Transforming Collections: The Triumph of Love by Titian
This episode of Transforming Collections takes an in-depth look at The Triumph of Love by Titian at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Over the last four decades, Art Fund and the Wolfson Foundation have worked together to help museums and galleries across the UK acquire over 170 works of art and historical interest. In 2008, Titian's The Triumph of Love, which depicts a mythological subject, was acquired by the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, adding to its existing Renaissance collection.
In this short film, Catherine Whistler, Keeper Western Art at the museum, shows us around the Italian Renaissance Gallery in which Titian's painting sits alongside works by Tintoretto, Veronese and other artists of the period.
'It gave us a new focus for our collection of Venetian art and for our presentation of the Venetian paintings in this Renaissance context,' says Whistler. 'There's something here for everyone, it doesn't matter how much you know about history or about art, you can immediately, I think, relate to this very, very compelling and enchanting image.'
