The Ultimate Edible Masterpiece of 2015 is announced
From sculptures made of shortbread to Symbolist swiss rolls, you impressed with your edible art – but there could only be one winner.
A satsuma recreation of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco painting has been named the Ultimate Edible Masterpiece of 2015 by our judging panel of creative experts.
The competition challenged the public to make edible versions of their favourite works of art or cultural icons in order to raise money for UK museums and galleries.
Great British Bake Off winner, Frances Quinn; chef, restaurateur and journalist, Rowley Leigh; and The Guardian's art critic, Jonathan Jones deliberated for more than an hour over the entries – which varied from a surrealist homage made from 500 marshmallows to a corset created out of coffee cake.
The judges praised the winning masterpiece's 'inspiring use of ingredients'. Leigh said, 'What distinguished this entry was imagination – it stood out straight away', while Quinn described it as 'really thinking outside the fruit bowl'.
Inspired by The Creation of Adam, which forms part of the ceiling of the papal chapel in Vatican City, the satsuma illustration was made by Priley Riley, 21, who is in the final year of her Fine Art degree at Loughborough University.
“I’ve never made art out of fruit before!”
She said of her entry: 'I’m not very good at cooking, as a student I normally live on microwave meals. But I really wanted to enter because I liked that it was an art-based competition and that the money would go towards supporting museums and galleries, so I had to find something I could use.'
Priley has won a KitchenAid mixer, What to Bake and How to Bake it by Jane Hornby (published by Phaidon Books), a Konditor & Cook Premium Kitchen Experience Day and a National Art Pass.
The judges chose a further 10 runners up who will also receive prizes.
