6. Lyme Park, Greater Manchester

The grounds of this spectacular Tudor-cum-Italian palace were host to one of the most iconic moments in British television: Mr Darcy, played by Colin Firth, emerging from the lake in the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Visitors to Lyme can enjoy not only the lake but a range of impressive tapestries and beautifully furnished rooms.
7. Eltham Palace, London
Free entry with National Art Pass
When Stephen and Virginia Courtauld chose to build their dream home together, they transformed the remains of Henry VIII's childhood residence into an Art Deco mansion. A true labour of love, the house is also host to expansive gardens, perfect for a picnic.
