Pictures were commissioned from Cantonese artists by foreign merchants, and were usually scenes of China itself; the commission of an image of a private residence in England is very rare. Oriel Lodge is Cheltenham's earliest Gothic Revival house and was built by Captain Charles Timmins (1773-1838). He almost certainly commissioned the work.
Provenance
Sold at Sharpes auctioneers, 2005, where purchased by Mr Letham, Scotland; Dan Shackleton, Scotland; Martyn Gregory Gallery, London.
