Like the portrait of Lady Betty, this painting displays the drama and sense of movement typical of Baroque by the great swathes of crimson draperies around Southwell’s waist and also in the atmospheric background landscape. The vigorous handling of paint, sense of realism in the direct expression on Southwell’s face and the plainness of his attire, are characteristic of Kneller’s style.
