His early work, which featured portraits of people on the alternative club scenes in Germany and London, earned him recognition as a chronicler of his generation. This early experience of showing his work, not via the gallery system, but through print, was critical in Tillmans' approach to photography as a medium. These are the first works by Tillmans to enter the collection and were selected after discussion with the artist. The nine works include two folded monochromes in acrylic box frames which are set against types of images familiar from the artist's earlier career, demonstrating both the continuity of Tillmans' concerns and their evolution formally. Acquired with an Art Fund grant and a partial gift from the artist.
