The collections cover social history, fine and decorative art as well as mythological works and items of fashion.
British art on display includes examples by the Pre-Raphaelites, Sickert, Sutherland and Hockney.
There is also an excellent collection of 15th- to 18th-century Italian art, including works by Bellucci and Carriera, while the Alwyn Bequest features pieces by Tissot, Conder, Rodin and Gauguin.
If the paintings you wish to view are in storage you can make an appointment to see them.
Meanwhile, the shoe collection is the largest example of footwear heritage in the world and has been designated as being of national and international significance.
It features more than 12,000 shoes from Egyptian footwear to contemporary British design, documentary footage and fine art.
