English Magic on tour

  • 1 June – 24 November 2013: British Pavilion, Venice Biennale
  • 18 January – 30 March 2014: William Morris Gallery, London Borough of Walthamstow Forest

  • 12 April – 21 September 2014: Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

  • 11 October 2014 – 11 January 2015: Turner Contemporary, Margate

The gallery makes for a particularly apt venue considering its former resident and namesake William Morris, stars in one of the central murals of the display.

Here he is painted as a colossus, hurling Roman Abramovich’s yacht Luna into the Venetian lagoon. The mural makes reference to Morris’ advocacy for socialism, depicting the colossus taking revenge on the capitalist multi-millionaires who now rampage around the Biennale during opening week.

Jeremy Deller has selected politically-themed items from the gallery's collection to display alongside his own material, which was first shown in Venice in 2013.
