“dry-stone walling, sacks of grain and rice, and a painting that includes part of the score of St John Passion by JS Bach bring a sense of real life, organic and ancient, into the museum”
Kounellis is an artist who has much to communicate to the public and mima will consider how his use of vernacular imagery and everyday materials can be related to the specific locality of Middlesbrough. In particular, his use of raw materials such as steel and coal is seen as chiming with the northeast's industrial heritage.
The venue has organised a significant web of engagement around the show, including a young advocates group and three creative apprenticeships, funded through the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, which will all play a part in curating and developing this display of highlights from the Artist Rooms collection of Kounellis' work.
