Vivid paintings and sculptures from 30 of Haiti's foremost artists, shining a light on an extraordinary self-taught tradition.
Haitian art owes its visionary quality to Voudou, a religion that grew out of a potent mix of slavery and neo-colonialism, combining African religions, Catholicism, indigenous beliefs, Freemasonry and Islam. Voudou brings the supernatural to everyday life, and its imaginative collective symbolism has been important to both French Surrealism and Latin American Magic Realism. Despite its striking visual appeal, Haitian art is not well-known in the UK, so this show promises to be something of a revelation. On display will be 150 vivid paintings produced over the last 60 years, together with sequin flags and sculptures by 30 of Haiti’s foremost artists.
