Tredegar House,

Overview

Tredegar House is one of the finest Restoration period buildings in Wales, with beautiful formal gardens in 90 acres of parkland. It was the home of the Morgan Family, a wealthy and powerful family who later became Lords Tredegar. Packed with tales of tragic ends, eccentric big spenders and famous philanthropists, there's plenty of juicy history to keep your imagination occupied. One of our favourites is the colourful character Evan, who along with hosting scandalous parties collected a menagerie of animals which included Blue Boy the parrot, Alice the bear and Somerset the boxing kangaroo.

Permanent collection

The family sold the house and contents in the 1950s to the Catholic Church and when Newport Borough Council bought the property in the 1974 many original objects were included in the sale, others are kindly loaned to the estate. A visit to the House explores ‘below stairs’ where the servants worked, not just the impressive State Rooms where the Morgans entertained. Objects and portraits from the family's interesting history tell their story well.

Art Funded works

An unusual cabinet from 1720 appears to be a scaled down adults bureau, and was presumably made for a child.  It is believed that the piece was commissioned by Sir William Morgan for his son.

William Owen's Portrait of Sir Charles Morgan shows the Lieutenant-Colonel seated in an armchair. Morgan built on the financial success of his father by setting up a company to develop the docks in Newport. He was MP for Brecon and Monmouth, and President of the Equitable Life Assurance Society.

The Tredegar Salt is one of the oldest original objects from the house dated from1598.

Visitor information

The venue prides itself on serving up a delicious Sunday roast (adults £6.95, children £3.95) and hosting an array of events from themed tours and seasonal celebrations. Newport is surrounded by lush countryside including the Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Brecon Beacons National Park and Forest of Dean – perfect for walking off that roast dinner.
