Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne
Overview
Towner, Eastbourne's award-winning new gallery, is the contemporary art museum for the South East. Towner presents major exhibitions of contemporary and historic art alongside changing displays from the renowned Towner Collection. The architecture alone is stunning and well worth a visit on a blustery day out in the area.
Permanent collection
The Towner Art Gallery holds one of the most significant public art collections in the South East. It boasts over 4,000 works of art by historic, modern and contemporary artists including works by Grayson Perry, Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore.
The two-screen film Evaders, bought for Towner with a grant from the Art Fund International programme in 2011, explores the mountainous path of the Lister Route, used by many to escape Nazi-occupied France. The film focuses on the ill-fated journey of Jewish writer and philosopher Walter Benjamin.
Visitor information
The architecturally acclaimed new building is fully accessible and includes a gift shop and café bar with stunning views over the South Downs. Towner offers regular events and workshops, as well as free drop-in sessions at weekends for families to create art of their own.
