This is a powerful example of Byrne's naive figurative approach, and was commissioned in 1978 by Mrs Johnstone whose name is drawn on the floor of the windowless room, as if in chalk.

The distortion of scale and form, and the suggestion of symbolism in the carefully placed objects, gives the work a disquieting and surreal quality.

Provenance

Commissioned by Mrs Johnston, Edinburgh; William. Hardie Gallery.
