Prosser's watercolours of Winchester, dating from the 1850s-1870s, afford a comprehensive coverage of all the historic buildings and many street scenes of the period.

This painting shows the recently constructed St Cross Hospital from the west side of the railway line with St Catherine's Hill in the background. It must be one of the very earliest views of the Southampton line, perhaps shown still under construction to judge from the pile of stone blocks shown on the embankment.
