Michael Palin steps in to support Staffordshire Hoard campaign

15 January 2010

Michael Palin has joined the list of high profile figures who have pledged support for The Art Fund’s nationwide campaign to save the Staffordshire Hoard for the West Midlands.

The Staffordshire Hoard is the most valuable hoard of treasures ever found on UK soil and was unearthed in Staffordshire last summer.

Independent charity The Art Fund is leading the campaign to save the Hoard for the nation. £3.3 million has to be raised by 17 April.
Michael Palin, author and broadcaster, said “The Staffordshire Hoard is an extraordinary discovery and it should surely stay near to where it was found, in a public place, to be enjoyed by all.”

Celebrated comedian Frank Skinner, who has roots in West Bromwich, has also stepped in to back The Art Fund’s campaign. He said: “It seems right that this beautiful and mysterious treasure, having lain so long in Staffordshire soil, should remain in the West Midlands. It belongs here, like West Bromwich Albion or bull terriers.”

The public are invited to donate here so that the Hoard can be jointly acquired for Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery and the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent.
