Two rock stars help drum up support for Staffordshire Hoard campaign

The Art Fund reveals today that two British rock stars have stepped in to pledge their support for the campaign to save the £3.3m Staffordshire Hoard for the West Midlands.

Bill Wyman, former bass guitarist for the Rolling Stones and metal detector enthusiast, said: “I was completely stunned when I first heard about the find – it’s truly astounding to think these precious gold and silver treasures lay undetected for so many centuries. Thank God for honest and conscientious metal detectorists! I’ve had some wonderful moments finding rare items but nothing compares with this. I do hope that the Staffordshire Hoard can stay in the West Midlands where it belongs.”

Jon Brookes, drummer from UK rock band the Charlatans, which was formed in the West Midlands, said: “When I told my children that a hoard of gold and silver has been found on our doorstep (I live one mile from the site) they were asking me to “show us where it was found”, and “when can we see it daddy”. The only other treasures they have seen were in tower of London. This treasure belongs to all generations to enjoy.”

Brookes and Wyman join a growing list of celebrity supporters of The Art Fund’s campaign, which includes West Bromwich-born comedian Frank Skinner, author and broadcaster Michael Palin, as well as historians Dr David Starkey and Dr Tristram Hunt.
