Overview
The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum offers a comprehensive encounter with the Romantic poet, voted 'Scotland's greatest Scot' in 2009, and known in the country simply as 'the bard'. Its unrivalled collection earned it a place on the Art Fund Prize short list in 2011.
Set among ten acres of Alloway countryside, the museum comprises the famous Burns Cottage where the poet was born, the historic landmarks where he set his greatest work (including Alloway Auld Kirk and Brig o'Doon), the elegant monument and gardens created in his honour and a modern museum housing the world’s most important collection of his life and works.
Permanent collections
The museum's collection includes more than 5,500 manuscripts, books, personal artefacts and artworks relating to Robert Burns and his legacy, including the most significant collection of manuscripts in the poet's hand.
Soon, it will be possible to view and learn about the collections and Robert Burns online. To Your Mouse, which is set to go live this year, is a multi-media application that will allow users to search the online collections database and learn about specific items.
On site, the environmental art in the museum gardens celebrates the poet's three great passions: women, nature and words.
Visitor information
The museum is served by an online giftshop, offering jewellery, sculptures, books, CD’s and homeware celebrating the life and works of Robert Burns.
There are specific programmes provided at the venue for schools, college and university and families. Learn more at the museum's education webpage.
