QUEEN AND COUNTRY - A Project by Steve McQueen

Following its unveiling at the Manchester International Festival last year, Queen and Country has been on display at Londonā??s Imperial War Museum. Now, The Art Fund has undertaken to tour the work and in the coming months it will travel to museums, galleries and art centres across the UK.

Admission is free at all venues.

    The Art Fund completed its UK tour of Queen and Country with a four month display at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery which holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world.

    The display opened on the 7th anniversary of British troops entering Iraq and closed in July to coincide with the 1st anniversary of the withdrawal from Iraq.

    A Queen and Country book produced by the British Council in association with the Art Fund, Imperial War Museum and Manchester International Festival was published as the display opened at the National Portrait Gallery.

    The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) is an independent think tank engaged in cutting edge defence and security research. A unique institution, founded in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington, RUSI embodies nearly two centuries of forward thinking, free discussion and careful reflection on defence and security matters.

    Queen and Country was at RUSI for a week ahead of its four month display at the National Portrait Gallery.

    On Wednesday 10 March a debate on the topic of "Commemorating our Armed Forces: Remembrance in a Modern Society" was held at RUSI. Chaired by Channel 4 television presenter, Jon Snow, the debate will heard contributions from:

    • Former UK Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt GCB CBE MC
    • Director-General of the Imperial War Museum, Diane Lees
    • Director-General of the Royal British Legion, Chris Simpkins
    • David Cotterrell, Artist and Professor of Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University

    The University Gallery is one of the region’s leading galleries of contemporary visual art and shows the work of internationally renowned artists such as William Kentridge, Fiona Banner and Jake & Dinos Chapman, while also supporting emerging new talent.     As a large Garrison Town, Colchester has a proud military heritage and the University of Essex works closely with local military families through the Garrison University Liaison Partnership. It was therefore particularly apt that Queen and Country was on display in Colchester over the 2009 Remembrance period.

    Wolverhampton Art Gallery has an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art which deals with the theme of war and conflict and its effects on society.     Queen and Country opened at mima Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art during the week that marked the 6th anniversary of the invasion in Iraq. With the withdrawal of British troops completed by summer 2009, this exhibition came at a timely moment to reflect upon the sacrifices made by the British Armed Forces in this conflict.

    mima is a bold new gallery of contemporary art bringing together the town’s art collections for the first time. It hosts temporary exhibitions of fine art and craft from 1900 to the present day and features the work of internationally acclaimed artists. The programme includes painting, drawing, ceramics, jewellery design, sound, film, mixed media, photography and sculpture

    Queen and Country was on display at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (SNGMA) in Edinburgh between 3 December 2008 and 15 February 2009.

    Part of the National Galleries of Scotland, SNGMA houses the national collection of international and Scottish art from 1900 to the present day. It includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Moore, Kokoshka and Hirst and the world’s most comprehensive collection of modern Scottish Art.

    Queen and Country was on display in St George’s Hall as part of the 2008 Liverpool Biennial, the UK's largest festival of contemporary art.

    St George's Hall was reopened in April 2007 after a £23m refurbishment.  A World Heritage Site, the Hall has been restored to its original glory and a new Heritage Centre was created to give visitors an insight into the building’s place in the history of the city.

    Queen and Country was on display at the Barbican Centre to coincide with the run of Black Watch the National Theatre of Scotland's award winning play based on interviews with former soldiers who served in Iraq.

    "We were proud to bring Queen and Country to the Barbican to run alongside The National Theatre of Scotland's award winning production Black Watch. These highly evocative creative responses to the Iraq war conflict illustrate powerfully the immense personal cost to those involved. We were pleased to offer audiences the opportunity to see this poignant exhibition and magnificent performance together."

    At the Southbank Centre, Queen and Country was installed in the Royal Festival Hall. The Hall, which reopened in June 2007 after a major refurbishment, programmed a series of projects that highlighted the social and political importance of artists, and the power of art to influence communities.
