Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery

January 2007In 2006 Shrewsbury Borough Council announced plans to close Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery (Rowley’s House) for a period of four years.

Over the years we have been a significant supporter of the museum. We have given grants totalling around £45,000 to help Shrewsbury Museum acquire 58 important works, including two magnificent paintings by John Bowen, A View from Haughmond Hill and A View from Broom Hall.

As of the 22nd of December 2006, Rowley’s House has been closed to the public.  Whilst undoubtedly a disappointment to the many admirers of Rowley’s House, the council have decided not to carry out any work on the building until at least 2010 which means that the venue will be open on certain dates and for special events throughout the year.  In addition, should they receive requests from the public to view particular items within the collection; access by appointment will be arranged.  Education work, exhibitions and events will continue throughout the year.  We will continue to follow developments closely.
