This massive 19th-century fantasy castle, crammed with spellbinding objects, was built for the wealthy Pennant family and is the perfect place to let your imagination wander. Aside from exploring the castle’s Victorian kitchens, walled garden and servants’ rooms, make sure you investigate the model railway and a superb collection of 19th- and 20th-century dolls.
Permanent collection
As home to one of the finest art collections in Wales, there are highlights galore in Penrhyn Castle. Feast your eyes on paintings by Rembrandt and Canaletto; a one-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria and hand-made Chinese and William Morris wallpapers.
Art Funded works
Landscape with Arched Gateway by Adam Pynacker (1620 - 1673) is an imaginary landscape depicting an arch with a large broken tree trunk and mountains in the background. This work originally hung in the small dining room (now known as the Breakfast Room) at Penrhyn Castle and was acquired jointly with the National Museum Wales in 2002.
Visitor information
Apart from enjoying the exotic tree and shrub collection, Victorian walled garden and surrounding parkland, why not book yourself a Tai Chi or Yoga lesson on the lawn? After all that exercise treat yourself to a Penrhyn cream tea – we hear it's not to be missed.
