James Smith, the leading Scottish architect of his time, built this neo-Palladian villa at Newhailes for himself c 1686. From 1709 the house was developed by the Dalrymples of Hailes, and remained in the family until 1997. It contains a remarkably intact set of early 18th-century Rococo interiors and fine collections of portraits and furniture. The house is set in an 18th-century designed landscape of woodland walks, open parkland and the remains of water gardens.
