We’ve teamed up with the National Gallery to offer two fully funded curatorial traineeships beginning autumn 2011. Aimed at nurturing the next generation of curators, the scheme will deliver practical guidance for each trainee at the National Gallery and their appointed regional museum. Each trainee will work on specific project with a beneficial outcome for the museum.
Manchester Art Gallery and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums have been successful in their application to partner with the National Gallery in London to benefit from the curatorial training. The scheme lasts for 22 months during which time the National Gallery will provide mentoring and support for two trainees to work with the collections – both at the National Gallery and at Manchester and the North East – with a focus on European paintings pre-1900.
Our director Stephen Deuchar said: “It’s our intention to nurture the best possible training and support for curators, in order to help the UK’s museum world to continue to thrive, and for significant acquisitions to be made. We’ve always worked closely with museums and galleries up and down the country, and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact of this new scheme on the next generation of curators.”
We will review the project in 2013, and consider a second tranche of funding to enable the recruitment a further two trainees, and two new regional museums partners.
