How to Acknowledge your Grant

The more help museums can give us, the more help we can give museums.

The Art Fund offers significant financial assistance to museums, galleries and historic houses to help with the purchase of works for their collections. We are financed by members’ subscriptions and by donations, gifts, legacies and investments.

With no exhibition space of our own, we rely heavily on the museums we have supported to promote us in the best way they can. We recruit many members through museums, enabling us to offer more grants to your collection and others.

This is why it is so important that you honour our straightforward conditions when you receive your grant. The terms and conditions you will sign before you receive a grant set out the conservation and security of your acquisition, and explain how to acknowledge The Art Fund’s help.

There are three key areas where we need your co-operation:

Free Admission to Art Fund Members

It is thanks to our members that we are able to support museum acquisitions, so it is important that our members are able to visit and enjoy the works of art that they have helped secure.

We therefore require you to admit Art Fund members free of charge to your permanent collection, so long as they show you a valid Art Fund card.

We also hope you will offer Art Fund members free entry to all temporary exhibitions. At the very least, we expect you to give them as generous a reduction as you offer to other supporters, such as your Friends.

Permanent Acknowledgement in your Gallery

When you receive an Art Fund grant, you will be required to make a permanent public acknowledgement of our assistance, both in the label next to the acquisition itself and on a display panel in your foyer.

Labelling all Art Fund-assisted Works

We require labels to acknowledge our assistance using our name ‘The Art Fund'. Please use a credit line such as ‘purchased/acquired/bought with the assistance of The Art Fund’. When we have met the total acquisition price, please state that the object has been ‘presented by The Art Fund’.

These rules apply whether the object is displayed in your own collection or is being lent for temporary exhibition elsewhere.

Labels should carry The Art Fund logo if at all possible. You can download this from our the ‘logos’ section of our website – www.artfund.org

Leaflets and Information Panels

Recipients of an Art Fund grant are required to display our membership leaflets as prominently as their own promotional material. You are expected to contact our marketing department if you need stock of leaflets.

We can also supply, free of charge, an information board for you to display in your foyer or other prominent location, which will reflect our joint aim of building and promoting your collection.

Press and Publicity

Whenever we help with an acquisition, we want to work closely with your publicity team to gain the best possible press coverage for your museum, your new acquisition and for The Art Fund.

You must contact our press team prior to sending out news releases and you must always acknowledge our support on all news releases relating to the object.

For further help, or to discuss your publicity plans, please contact our press team on 020 7225 4837 or email press@artfund.org

Print, Merchandise and the Web

All reproductions of Art Fund-assisted works must carry an acknowledgement of the Art Fund’s help. This applies to reproductions in museum guides, your magazines and catalogues, and on any merchandise, including postcards.

You should add a link from your website to our: www.artfund.org. We will reciprocate this on our site.

Promoting your Museum to our Members

We continually strive to promote museums and their collections, and are keen to publicise your collection to our members through our magazines, email newsletters and at our events. We are always keen to know about new exhibitions and events in your museum.

Please call our Marketing Department on 020 7225 4841. Together we can attract wider audiences to museums across the UK, as well as helping to develop permanent collections.

Contact Us

Please get in touch with us if you have any difficulties meeting these requirements – we’ll do our best to help and we can be flexible where necessary.
