The museum brings together two major collections: the National Small Boat Collection and the Cornish Maritime Collection. The displays show the story of the people of Cornwall, who use small boats and for whom the sea has been an essential lifeline and source of food; the museum explores their history from the first small boats to the highly sophisticated boats used today.

The newly-refurbished Falmouth Gallery illustrates the history of the Packet Ships and explores the maritime history of Falmouth from the middle ages to the present day. The Flotilla Gallery houses the collection of hanging boats and the major exhibition, which changes annually.
